Tips for Getting Started with Pilates

If you’re looking for a workout that targets nearly every part of your body, Pilates should be on your radar.

Pilates promotes strength, flexibility and a range of motion for joints, making it a movement for life. It reshapes and strengthens your body, whilst improving flexibility, without putting additional stress on the joints. Pilates is also a fantastic way to relieve stress, due to the breath, focus and concentration required.

What’s the goal? No matter how fit or what other forms of exercise you do or have done in the past. Pilates is humbling, this is because Pilates teaches you a whole new way of moving and breathing. Start by asking yourself what you want to achieve from Pilates. If you’re looking for something that will challenge you, try a dynamic power pilates class. If you’re looking to incorporate more stretching and relaxation into your routine, try our pilates fundamentals. For the best results, join Stef’s Signature Sculpt guide, with five classes per week. Depending on what other exercise you do you can simply add two to three classes into your weekly split for the perfect balance.

Build up slowly. When starting a brand new movement it’s expected to perform movements incorrectly in the first instance. Remember to always perfect your form first, master the precision and control of a movement, especially when adding weight to your session.

Don’t overthink it. If you’re nervous about starting, just start. You certainly don’t need to be flexible to try Pilates. Gradually, session by session your strength, belief and mindset will grow. Like everything, everyone starts as a beginner at some point, and just because you’ve been a gym goer for years doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have an advantage. Pilates is humbling, dive in.
